September Sales'2025 | Festive Tailwinds Power India's Car Market with Tata and Mahindra Accelerating and Maruti Losing Ground

The Indian auto market roared into the festive season with renewed momentum. Passenger vehicle sales in September 2025 touched 3.78 lakh units, registering a 5.5% year-on-year (YoY) and a strong 15.5% month-on-month (MoM) growth.

While this surge signals consumer confidence and pent-up demand, the bigger story lies in how the market leadership map is quietly redrawing itself.

The New Power Equation: Domestic Giants in the Fast Lane

For decades, Maruti Suzuki defined India's car-buying psychology with the key levers of value, mileage, and trust. But this September data tells a different story.

Market seeing a Structural shift

• Maruti sold 1.32 lakh units, an 8.4% YoY decline, losing over 5 percentage points of market share to rivals.

• Tata Motors and Mahindra are rewriting the playbook. Tata clocked 59,667 units (up 45.3% YoY), while Mahindra delivered 56,233 units (up 10.1% YoY), both commanding record market shares.

• Indian consumers are no longer buying cars; they're buying personality, presence, and purpose. And in this space, Tata and Mahindra are dominating the conversation.

The SUV Surge: From Category to Culture

• SUVs now make up over 55% of India's total car sales – a staggering shift from the hatchback-driven era of the 2010s.

• What started as an "aspirational upgrade" has evolved into a cultural preference. Consumers are choosing vehicles that combine stance, safety, and space – mirroring global trends but shaped by uniquely Indian realities: potholes, long commutes, and multi-generational travel.

• Tata and Mahindra have perfectly read this trend and have their playbook in place:

o Tata's design language (led by Nexon, Punch, and Harrier) blends sharp aesthetics with cutting-edge safety. India's first home grown 5-star-rated line-up.

o Mahindra's product strategy is built around muscular identity and digital sophistication; the Scorpio-N, XUV700, and Thar symbolize capability, connected tech, and adventure.

o Together, they have made SUVs not just a segment, but a statement.

For Others: its consolidation, Not Collapse

• Hyundai remains a steady No. 4 player at 51,547 units, but its share dipped slightly to 13.6%.

• Toyota continues to grow with 13.8% YoY, led by hybrid momentum (Hyryder, Innova Hycross).

• MG and Skoda both saw triple-digit or near-double growth, albeit from smaller bases – indicating that niche positioning and hybrid portfolios can still win attention in a cluttered market.

What Lies Ahead

With the festive quarter underway and multiple launches (Tata Curvv, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Hyundai Creta EV) on the horizon, Q4 could push India's PV sales past the 4-lakh mark for the first time since COVID.

However, the real differentiator will not be discounts; it will be design, digital experience, and delivery speed.

India's car market is no longer about who sells the most; it's about who defines the next aspiration curve. And in September 2025, that curve unmistakably bends towards Tata and Mahindra.
